Video game quiz - from [livejournal.com profile] partywhipple

Now here's one where I actually have something to say. :)

How long have you been playing video games?: Since I was nine. Well, before that I had played the occasional Atari 2600 game, but then (when I got my Commodore 64) was the first time I did so on a regular basis.
How often do you play video games?: Pretty much daily. Though often only for a few minutes, and occasionally all day.
How much, monthly, do you spend on video games?: Not much. It's not all that often that a game I want comes out... one every two months or so is about it. I'll try out (i.e. pirate) other games if they look moderately interesting, but I usually play them a bit and decide they're not all that good.
What game consoles do you own, currently?: Consoles? I've never owned a game console. My games are on the PC -- they're so much better (though I do envy console users the console RPGs -- "console RPGs" is almost a totally separate genre from PC RPGs.)

List your Top Ten All-Time Favorite Video Games: (This is a very hard question for me. So I'm going to list the top ten, but in no particular order)

1. DOOM
2. Unreal Tournament (all versions)
3. Baldur's Gate II
4. Ultima V
5. Ultima VII (parts I and II)
6. Deus Ex
7. Thief
8. System Shock II
9. Final Fantasy II (IV in Japan)
10. Master of Orion II (still giving III a chance...)

Favorite game character (male): Jon Irenicus (Baldur's Gate II)
Favorite game character (female): Laverne (Day of the Tentacle)
Favorite game character (other): SHODAN (System Shock I and II)
Favorite game company: Well, looking at my top-ten list, it looks like the Looking Glass Studios gets the medal, being responsible for Thief, System Shock II, and Deus Ex (not to mention honorable mentions Thief II and the original System Shock). However, this team did those games at a lot of different companies (including Origin Systems and Ion Storm)
Favorite game mascot: PC games don't have mascots, and I don't really care for any of the console-games ones. Well, unless you can call some of those DoA3 characters mascots... :>
Favorite game system: The PC, of course!
Favorite game series: Ultima
Favorite fighting game: Mortal Kombat II.
Favorite RPG: Baldur's Gate II.
Favorite adventure game: Day of the Tentacle!
Favorite side-scroller: Wow, haven't played any of those in a while. I'd say Zelda II on the SNES.
Favorite party/multi-player game: Worms! (And its many sequels)
Favorite survival horror game: Alone in the Dark. That's a classic; I doubt many remember it.
Favorite game storyline: Deus Ex.
Favorite game ending: Ultima VII. Damn you, Avatar! Daaaaaaaaaamn yoooooooooou!
LEAST Favorite game ending: Eye of the Beholder. For those who don't remember this (i.e. everyone but me, yes, I know), this was one of the first games to have 256-color graphics, and was considered the most graphically impressive game ever made at the time... and for the "ending" it dropped you to DOS and gave you a screen of text.
Favorite game intro: Oh, pick a Blizzard game. Any of them.
Favorite game music/soundtrack: Don't really have one. Riven's soundtrack was fantastically atmospheric for the game, though.
Favorite game song/tune: Well, half of Unreal Tournament 2003's music cracks me up because of how overly dramatic and triumphant it is (or how awful it is, in the case of some user-created maps), but I can't think of a song from a video game that I really like on its own merits.
Favorite game villain: SHODAN (System Shock I and II) The creepiest creation ever. Although Jon Irenicus (Baldur's Gate II) comes very close.
Favorite game hero: Garrett (Thief I and II)
Favorite game heroine: Alice (Alice)
Favorite movie based on a game: Oh, you mean crap? I don't really like crap. The same goes for books based on games.

Either Or!

2D or 3D?: 3D. I would have said 2D until about when Warcraft III came out... now the 3D stuff looks better in every genre.
Resident Evil/Biohazard or Silent Hill?: Sorry, not a console gamer. Never played either.
Onimusha or Tenchu?: Sorry, not a console gamer. Never played either.
Zelda or Dark Cloud?: I'll go with Zelda, because I've heard of it (and played the first three)

Odds and Ends

What do you think is the most over-rated game?: Quake III. It's just like Unreal Tournament, only crappier!
Game you'd like to see be made into a feature film (animated or live action): Deus Ex would be cool if it could be done well... but I don't think it could be.
Game series you meant to continue: Thief. I played the first all the way through and loved it, but never really played past the second mission of Thief II... and now III is coming out.
Game series you want to end: Mortal Kombat. II was the best, it's all been downhill from there.
Game series you want revived: Star Control (I never would have thought of this had [livejournal.com profile] partywhipple not answered this, but I'd so love another Star Control game)
Game you'd like to see rehashed with new graphics and features: Ultima V.
Import game you wish was translated and released in your respective country: I don't really know of any import games... unlike on consoles, most PC games are released first in English.
Game you can play for hours, on end, without ever getting bored: Morrowind. Well, not so much now that my character's more powerful than anything left in the game.
Game character you'd shag if he/she/it were real: Imoen (Baldur's Gate II)
Game character you'd use as a punching bag if he/she/it were real: I don't tend to get quite that annoyed with video game characters.
What do you think is the hardest game ever?: Hexen II. I've never passed the first room. No, seriously.
Have you ever yelled at a game?: Hell, I hold conversations with them.
Here's a scenario: a game is going to be made with you as the main character: What, is Sierra trying to start up "Nerd Quest"?
Here's another scenario: you're going to be sent to a remote island for six months, and you can only take one console and one game. What will you take?: I'll take a PC and any MMORPG. I don't like them all that much most of the time, but I can't think of anything else that would be able to keep my interest for six straight months.

Holy sweet lord! Do you know how to make Ultima 7 work on a modern PC?? I can't get mine to work, at all. Sigh.

For some odd reason when I was taking this quiz I was thinking of Console games the whole time. Master of Orion 2, Star Control 2 and X-Com UFO Defense are some of my favorites as well. How the heck can I choose just ten???

I would have said 2D until about when Warcraft III came out... now the 3D stuff looks better in every genre.

I have to hand it to Blizzard -- until War3, I thought that all 2D games looked better -- after all, prerendered stuff was of higher quality visually than 3D polygons and textures. But War3 was a game that looked as beautiful as any 2D game, and until you rotated the camera you almost couldn't tell that it was 3D.

I remember Alone in the Dark. It was a damn fun game. In fact, I probably still have the little book that was used for copy protection.
