Well, I'm posting this entry in Firefox on a functional Gentoo Linux 2.6.11 system with KDE. So I finally managed to get everything working. The most remarkable thing to me is how little disk space the whole thing takes up... especially considering that save for Firefox I have full source code for everything installed (and I should know, having just spent two days compiling all of it.)

I like it, though it takes me much longer to accomplish anything due to not really knowing what I'm doing. However, I'm achieving my objective quite handily -- that objective being to figure out what I'm doing in a Unix-like environment.

One very interesting thing -- I've had quite a few crashes during compiles, where I get a nonreproducable segmentation fault. I normally run my computer overclocked in Windows (RAM at DDR-466 CL2, 2.2 GHz processor running at 2.35 GHz), and it's totally stable -- I don't have any crashes in games, and I can run Prime95 or a memory test for hours without a glitch. However, even after setting everything to below stock speeds (actually underclocking the system for stability) and raising voltages, it still took me a couple tries to compile glibc. It's interesting how much more stressful a massive compile like that is on the system than anything I normally throw at it.

I'm still very much enjoying the few days between jobs; I'll be starting my new job on Monday. As much as I like the time off (and I do), I'm also looking forward to that. About the only unpleasant thing has been the fact that for some reason I didn't sleep at all Sunday night or last night -- which is very strange, as I've never been awake all night before. I'm always pretty slow falling asleep -- 20 minutes is typical and an hour isn't rare -- but up until this week I always did at some point or another. The odd thing is that right now I'm about as non-stressed as it's possible to be, so there doesn't appear to be any reason for it.

[livejournal.com profile] sheeplass is in Molten Core in World of Warcraft tonight; I elected not to go because after being up all night, I'm not intending to be awake as long as she'll probably be at that. I shall find something to do; what I've been wanting to do is study for the CISSP exam (that's going pretty well; I'm about halfway there and should be able to take the exam by the end of summer), but 8 hours of sleep in the last 72 hours means I don't have the concentration to do it. Perhaps I'll find a nice fiction book on our overflowing bookshelves.

I've also been using the time off to do a bit of spring cleaning... it's amazing how stuff expands to fill the space available. I took an entire carload (well, small-SUV-load) of crap to Goodwill, a computer recycling place, and the dumpster this week... and so far, the only rooms we've gone through are a bathroom and two closets.
