Phone chess
May. 8th, 2005 09:21 pmI figure I have at least a few chess players on my friends list who would find this amusing.
I have a Samsung cell phone with four Java-based games on it. One of them is a rendition of computer chess. It has three difficulty settings, which I have taken to calling "Houseplant," "Cat," and "Lemur," despite that I think this may be an insult to the lifeforms involved. It plays appallingly bad chess -- I haven't actually observed any difference between the difficulty settings, as even on the hardest ("Lemur") difficulty, I can't imagine how it would be possible to play worse chess. Moving at random would be a substantial improvement -- it's almost like it tries to lose. Here is an actual, typical game on the hardest setting; I'm playing white:
Someone should have perhaps told Samsung that an average cell phone does not have the processing power to play chess in Java.

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 ?? 3. Nc3 Qxa2 ??I don't even think I need to go on from there. Checkmate usually happens within 10 moves. For those who don't read chess notation, he brought out his queen to the middle of the board at the first available opportunity, and when I responded by threatening the queen, he deliberately trades it for a pawn. Or perhaps "a pwn" would be more appropriate.
