So, tonight I got my copy of DOOM 3, the most anticipated computer game of the decade. So far, it's as incredible as everyone hoped it would be. Now, it is a straight-up shooter, so you have to like that sort of game, but if you do... it rocks.
It's also scary as hell. It takes place on a Mars base with the world's most inconveniently unreliable electrical system. The lights always seem to go out at the worst possible time.
Observations (spoiler-free) so far:
1.) The graphics are, in fact, amazing. They'd be even better with antialiasing, but that requires more graphics hardware than I have. Even at 800x600, they're fantastic.
2.) If there's one thing I've learned from
kitiara and
abz6598, it's that you always shoot zombies in the head. This is exceedingly good advice. They tend to skeletonize in a very gory fashion when shot in the head.
3.) I would trade half the weapons in the game for a SureFire WeaponLight with a momentary switch. Having to put down your weapon to get out the flashlight to peer into a dark, menacing place... very not good. :)
